The Shamrock

Image
Just finished this painting titled "The Shamrock" and sent it off to the gallery (Rehs Gallery).  I spent a good 4 months on this painting off and on at night for 3-4 hours at a time. I'd say in total I spent at least a good 60 hours on it and feel it was well worth it.  This was my biggest and most ambitious painting to date. New Poster Studies (and an old one)

Image
Poster studies are a big part of my process so I wanted to share some recent one and also the first still life one that I did (that I love). I always create a small poster of a painting that I'm attempting to do so that I can work out composition, color composition, values and also to see if this is going to make it past this stage and to a full painting. Most of the time these will make it to a final painting but sometimes its playing with the elements and tweaking them before working the final painting. I've always received good feedback on these as they tend to be a bit looser and the color is pushed sometimes a bit more than what I optically see or will put in the final painting. Just finished this one, I posted the process (3 posts previous about the Ebauche). Also, I've attached the poster study for the painting. I've always love the story of Shackleton so I figured I'd try to recreate a scene from inside the ship when it got stuck in the ice.
