Step by Step: Still Life

Image
This past year I have been able to paint with a small group of professional artists in Maynard MA. While teaching, I wanted to take them through the step by step process that I had learned at The Water Street Atelier. Below is each step in this   process for doing a still life painting. The Drawing : this is the most essential part of the whole process. I use my drawing (done from life) to recreate the 3 dimensional world on my 2 dimensional paper. I'm mapping over the set up so many times that I become really familiar with the objects and the orientation of the light to the objects. Transfer to Canvas : In this step, I get a printout of my drawing to scale, and do a paint transfer to canvas. Essentially its rubbing paint on the back of paper and then applying the paper over the canvas. I use a ball point pen over the printout to push the paint onto the canvas. when my drawing is transferred and dry, I go back in and do a open grisaille. This is done usually in on

Oil Sketch - July

Image
From time to time I'm able to drop in on Max's class and paint with him. He's the best teacher I've had because he's so caring for all of his students. Here is another 2 hour oil sketch done on Hardboard from his class at the Art Students League.

Oil Painted Sketch

Here are a few of the oil painting sketches I enjoy doing. They range from 2-3 hours in length, and I try to keep them loose like Sargent. All are done on hardboard.  Todd

RayMar Art Contest Finalist

Image
Just found out I was a finalist for the RayMar Art Contest for my painting "Books with Book and Letters". Again, I'm humbled to be in such good company and to have been picked as a finalist. Warren Chang was the judge for this month. Here are his comments: Judge's Comments:   Wonderful feeling of movement of light, beautifully rendered. The lone intense red effectively acts as a strong accent of color. - Warren Chang Here is a link to the finalists and winner. http://www.raymarartcontest.com/winners/81 Todd

Vanitas Painting

Image
Here is a painting that I just finished for a book. Also below is the color study. I was trying not to show the skull in the Vanitas painting and worked the idea of the shadow coming in from out of the frame. Ultimately, I ended up canning the idea and went with something a little more traditional. Best, Todd
