Oil Sketch - July

From time to time I'm able to drop in on Max's class and paint with him. He's the best teacher I've had because he's so caring for all of his students. Here is another 2 hour oil sketch done on Hardboard from his class at the Art Students League.

I forgot to ask in the email if you had mix a color string for this painting or did you mix intuitively as you went. Also did you build up to the lights starting with the half tone?

Hi Nghia,
With all these Oil Sketches, I use an open palette so I don't mix. I usually work the whole painting all together, rather than the classical approach of rolling forms. I start with the large major plains and then build paint and tip things into the light or away from the light. I'm also drawing while I paint, so fixing as it goes along. Working this way, I stay with a large brush so I don't get into details. I will try to record a step by step so you can see this approach in progress...

oh, my, i never heard of color strings and i'm not sure what you mean by an open palette. i once asked a teacher about that and don't feel it was ever satisfactorily answered. i paint classically and I guess I'm rolling forms; i didn't know there was another way to do it….
thanks, todd. your work is beautiful.

Hi Melissa,

Open palette refers to working without premixing your colors. For color string when using the Munsell color system, color is broken down into 3 dimensions: Value (light vs. dark), Hue (color) and Chroma (saturation). If you can premix, you can just think of value when painting instead of shifting the color and intensity of the color. Therefore, you are rolling forms from light to dark or vice versa. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at toddmcasey@gmail.com. Also here is a link to a string that I posted previously. Also on the color wheel, there are colored strings mixed on the inside of the wheel.

Thanks for the kind words on my art.

Todd
