Master Copies: J. C. Leyendecker, Albert Herter and Norman Rockwell
I love to dig in and see how artists worked in the past and extract and use some of their techniques. Master Copying has always been a part of learning as a student. Peter Paul Rubens did over 450 copies in his illustrious career. I try to do at least one every 6 months or so, so here are a few Master Copies that I've done over the past few years. J. C. Thanks for the kind words.
Most of my portraits are done so the head is about 2 inches in high. I usually work on 18 x 24 inch paper, so I have room to work out problems on the side of the paper. I use a HB pencil and a Kneaded eraser. HB is a good mid range pencil that won't dig into the paper, but can also get some nice darks. Some people use multiple pencils, to keep the lights in a range, and to keep the darks in a certain range.
Best,
Todd
